CARES support: £151k grant via the Community Energy Generation Fund

Technology: Rooftop mounted solar PV

Wallacetown is transforming clean energy into long-term community investment with solar panels installed on three local schools: Wallacetown Early Years Centre, St John’s Primary and Newton Primary. The project is expected to generate £1 million over 25 years, creating a sustainable community fund to support priorities such as youth programmes, facility improvements and tackling fuel poverty.

Delivered by the Fort, Seafield and Wallacetown Community Association, the initiative is fully community-owned and supported by Scottish Government’s CARES community energy fund alongside £216,000 from SP Energy Networks’ Net Zero Fund.

By selling power to the schools at a reduced rate and exporting excess to the grid, the project is forecast to generate £1 million in community benefit over 25 years.

All profits will be invested into a community managed fund to support local priorities. Early engagement with pupils, who have already shared ideas on how future income should be spent, highlights the project’s strong educational and social values.
