We’ll use this award to provide match funding for projects applying to the CARES Community Building Fund from applicants in the Highland Local Authority area. This makes it easier for communities to access support and move their projects forward.

Housing at the heart of it

Access to affordable housing is one of the Highlands’ biggest challenges. Funding from this round of Highland SDF responds directly to that need.

A total of £656,000 will help deliver new homes across rural and island communities. This will help retain residents, attract new people and support long-term community sustainability.

From the Isle of Canna to Coigach and beyond, community-led housing developments and local infrastructure projects will meet immediate needs and create lasting benefits. This includes stronger local economies, improved quality of life and communities better placed to thrive.

Beyond housing: community services and net zero

The Highland SDF supports more than housing. It also invests in community woodlands, growing spaces and essential local services.

In Kilchoan, this includes a new shop, fuel station and EV charging hub. These projects show how community-led solutions can meet local needs while supporting Scotland’s net zero ambitions.

What projects are eligible?

To be eligible for Highland SDF, projects must deliver clear benefits to the community. This includes:

  • Addressing local challenges such as depopulation or housing needs.
  • Improving community infrastructure and services.
  • Supporting sustainability, climate action and economic resilience.

What is key is that projects reflect local priorities and address long-term needs. You can find out more information on SSE’s Sustainable Development Fund here.

Supporting communities to take action

Local Energy Scotland will use this funding to provide match funding for eligible projects in the Highland region applying to the CARES Community Building Fund. Where projects meet the criteria, we can provide the required 20% directly.

This removes a key barrier for applicants who cannot access other sources of match funding. For projects eligible for both the CARES Community Building Fund and the SSE Highland Sustainable Development Fund top-up, there is no need to apply twice. We manage this in the background, so communities can focus on developing their projects.

If your community organisation or development trust is based in an eligible Highland area, CARES funding could support your project. We can help you explore your options, guide you through the process and connect you with the right support.

Looking ahead

Community benefit funding works best when it is reinvested in the places that host renewable energy infrastructure. It gives communities the opportunity to shape their own future, reduce inequalities and build resilience.

As these projects move forward, they show what is possible when communities are supported to lead change.
